Local Money Gets Creative

February 28, 2009

Dear BerkShares Businesses,

This week marked the second edition of the WSBS monthly radio program, Local
Biz, with BerkShares board member Sharon Palma and Steffen Root, co-owner
of Berkshire Bike & Board in Great Barrington. The hosts were joined by
local business owner and BerkShares participant, Jody Soules of the Wild
Bird Country Store, located in the bright yellow house at 783 Main Street in
Great Barrington.

Jody was an enthusiastic and articulate guest, offering listeners food for
thought and creative ideas about how and where to spend BerkShares. When it
comes to spreading the word about her business, Jody uses BerkShares to
advertise with a number of local publications including BerkShares Best and
WSBS (and may want to consider brand new BerkShares sign-ups like the
Western Mass Pennysaver and the Pittsfield Gazette). Because the quality of
care and attention offered by local service providers is important to Jody,
she pays for her printing and copying with BerkShares at the Great
Barrington, family-owned company, KwikPrint.

Wild Birds Country Store actively supports local production by using
BerkShares at Borgnis & Sons in Lee for high quality lumber to make
beautiful bluebird houses and enlisting a chain-saw artist in Otis for
beautiful carved creations. For other homegrown wonders, Jody supports
Project Native’s offering of local perennials, and the many
BerkShares-accepting food purveyors.

Last but not least, Jody offered delightful imaginations of creative ways
for businesses to collaborate in featuring our local currency, like a Biking
and Bird Watching Bundle for guests at local B&Bs – all paid for with
BerkShares.

We encourage you to get creative about how to increase BerkShares usage and
recirculation. It is a pleasure to watch this beautiful currency circulating
through our community in more and more ways, helping to grow a stronger,
more resilient local economy. Please share your ideas and suggestions with
us and tune in next month’s Local Biz radio program at 9am on March 25th on
WSBS 8.60 AM featuring Fuel Coffee Shop owner, Robin Curletti.

Also, be sure to check out the new BerkShares Business sign-ups listed
below.

Best wishes,

The BerkShares Team
