BerkShares, the Berkshires’ very own internationally famous local currency,
is hosting a special evening on Saturday, August 22nd. Local food and
spirits combined with a silent auction to suit the times. Rather than
emphasizing objects, BerkShares will be auctioning services and experiences
-- services almost everybody can use and experiences most people couldn’t
otherwise access.
In keeping with BerkShares philosophy of focusing on local production, local
landscape, and local culture, auction items will include tours of local
farms and manufacturing sites; hikes and bike rides and plane rides through
the Berkshires followed by meals at some of our fine local restaurants; and
offerings from the Berkshires Creative Economy. At the same time,
recognizing that pocketbooks are tight, BerkShares businesses are generously
donating services needed for home, health, and profession.
When: August 22nd from 7 to 9:30 pm
Where? Crissey Farms in Great Barrington (426 Stockbridge Road, Route 7,
behind the Barrington Brewery)
Why? To support BerkShares as a tool for strengthening the local economy –
and to have fun, of course.
Entry is $25 or BerkShares per person. Tickets may be purchased online
(www.berkshares.org) or at the door.
Don't eat before you come. There will be plenty of tasty hors d’oeuvres
catered by Crissey Farm. Locke, Stock, and Barrel will offer tastings of
some of its fine wines, as will Domaney's, Guidos, and Grape Finds – all
locally owned businesses serving the Berkshire community for decades.
Furnace Brook Winery will showcase its Berkshire grown and produced wines.
Not a wine drinker, then try the locally made beers of Barrington Brewery
and Pittsfield Brew Works.
Be prepared to bid on a 4-hour cooking lesson at the Red Lion Inn with Chef
Brian Alberg. Or a tour of Rawson Brook Farm (of goat cheese fame),
including meeting, petting, watching the milking of the goats, seeing how
the cheese is made, a cheese tasting and your favorite tub of cheese to take
home! Or a guided tour for up to 6 people with historian Bernie Drew of the
various W.E.B. DuBois sites around Great Barrington. Or go cross country
skiing with author and BerkShares friend, Bill McKibben in Vermont. You can
even learn to juggle – guaranteed!
And what about those useful services? Screened topsoil; a cord of firewood
cut, split and delivered; an oil change; spa services; editing services;
skilled carpentry; garden weeding and so much more!
Pay for your winning bids in BerkShares or federal dollars or check or
credit card. But we do prefer BerkShares, so stock up before the event by
visiting one of the 13 participating branches of Berkshire Bank, Salisbury
Bank and Trust, Lee Bank Pittsfield Coop Bank, or Lenox National Bank.
To learn more about BerkShares and see the full updated list of auction
offerings, check the BerkShares website at www.berkshares.org, and then plan
to arrive early, enjoy great food, drink and company, and bid often! Help
yourself while helping BerkShares.
