Growing Community Credit March 22, 2009 Dear Berkshares Businesses, This week we've got more great media attention to share. BerkShares co-founder, Susan Witt, along with the founder of the Ithaca Hours program in Ithaca, NY were both featured on an hour-long radio program this week on Your Call, a radio talk show on KALW 91.7, a public radio station in northern California. Susan guided the conversation to an understanding of the strong philosophical underpinnings for local currencies as well as innovations and future plans for BerkShares and other similar currencies. She fielded questions from how the currency was launched to how regional currencies might one day be backed by killowatt hours, as suggested by visionary Buckminster Fuller. In Susan’s words, BerkShares is working to create a financial medium for local people to actually make decisions about who should receive credit in their region what kinds of businesses people would like to see in the area and how they can provide low-cost credit for the start-up of these businesses through the tool of a local currency. You can listen in on this inspiring roundtable discussion here: http://yourcallradio.blogspot.com/2009/05/your-call-051809-can-local-currencies.html Susan also emphasized that BerkShares encourages face-to-face transactions, brings people off the internet, and back to Main Street, back to small businesses. With spring in full swing, it's time to cultivate new growth in these face-to-face moments. Please encourage your business associates and friends to sign-up to accept BerkShares to support the local economy, community, ecology and a vision of sustainability for our region.
